How LoreOwl finds your engines

LoreOwl looks for installed engines when it starts. To see them, open Integrations and select an engine under Engines.

  • Godot. LoreOwl looks in Desktop, Downloads, %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Godot, Program Files\Godot and its own download folder. It can download the version a project needs, including the .NET build for C# projects.
  • Unity. LoreOwl reads Unity Hub's editor folders, including a second install folder set in Hub. It can install a missing version through Unity Hub.
  • Unreal Engine. LoreOwl finds engines installed by the Epic Games Launcher and registered source builds. Install Unreal with the Epic Games Launcher.

To add an engine that LoreOwl did not find, select Add a version. To choose the version that new projects use, select Make default.

Project versions

LoreOwl reads the engine version from the project. It uses project.godot for Godot, ProjectSettings/ProjectVersion.txt for Unity and EngineAssociation in the .uproject file for Unreal. It then opens the project in the matching engine.

  • LoreOwl does not open a Unity project in a newer Unity. Unity would upgrade the project, and you cannot undo that. A build in a newer Unity only shows a warning.
  • LoreOwl warns you before Godot or Unreal converts a project to a newer version.
  • A Godot project that uses C# needs the .NET build of Godot.

New projects

Each engine has a 2D, a 3D and a blank template. Unreal templates are Blueprint-only, so you do not need Visual Studio to create one. Every new project gets a .loreignore file that keeps caches and builds out of version control.

Open a project in its editor

On the Projects page, select the project and choose Open with. To pick a specific version, select Editor. The default is Match the project automatically.

Code editors

LoreOwl finds VS Code, VS Code Insiders, Cursor, Windsurf and VSCodium. Open Integrations, then Code editors, to choose the editor for Godot or Unreal scripts. Use Open in in the Files section to open a file in it.

For how each engine builds, see Builds.
